Santa Cruz Mountains
End of the growing season and rose blooms are gone. Yet their fruits, the rose hips, linger and ripen in a blaze of color. High in vitamin C, clever cooks harvest these for jelly.
Plump and ripening, persimmons hang low, heralding the last of this year's fruit harvest. Cold weather and frost only make them sweeter. Food for wildlife and humans alike.
The loyal dogwood, shading us all summer, is slow to lose its leaves. As if still serving us, their fall-time spreading of color intricacies boggles our minds and soothes our souls.
